For Parents

Thank you for taking the time to visit my website! If you have any questions on topics being covered feel free to email me or check out your child's Google Classroom account.

Below please find some suggestions that I believe will help your child succeed this year in biology.

  • Homework is posted in google classroom.

  • Help your child set up a routine to complete work. Setting aside a period of time where they are separate from electronics and distractions can be very helpful in allowing them to focus on content, whether it be reviewing material, completing homework or studying for tests.

  • Create a work space that is clutter free and is for homework only.

  • Encourage them to utilize the resources that are shared with them through Google Classroom. This includes the Albert.io platform for students in AP Biology (or any of their AP classes for that matter), various videos/ podcasts, interactive sites, presentations, etc.

  • Encourage your child to seek extra help or review during my office hours. If those times are not convenient encourage use of the science help desk during their study hall or unassigned periods.

  • Allow and encourage your child to study in a group setting when possible. Students who discuss, work together to solve problems and teach topics to each other tend to perform better on assessments. By explaining or teaching to others they can assess their own knowledge or grasp on a topic.

  • Encourage your child to complete test corrections. Not only can they earn points back but the process of figuring out the correct answers is another way for them to review material that they may have not completely grasped prior to the assessment.

  • Word / Concept webs are great tools no matter what the subject is. These help to create connections between ideas within a chapter, as well as help to relate the big ideas that are covered throughout the year.

  • Remind your children of optional assignments. These are short assignments or activities (given out about 1-2 times a marking period) that help review material but also are designed to give bonus points to those who spend the time completing.

  • Never hesitate to reach out to me with any concerns you may have. Email is best mmansfield@summit.k12.nj.us

  • For parents of students in AP Biology:

    • Invest in an AP Biology review book for your child. These summarize units and is a useful tool for them to see if they understand big ideas. If they are reviewing and stumble upon something that they are puzzled by tell them to come see me or send me an email.

    • Paul Anderson has a great site Bozeman Biology. There are several videos that summarize units and give another voice to students.
